Q: What brought you to Nationwide Children’s Hospital?

I was initially attracted to the strength of the existing surgery services at Nationwide Children’s and was further intrigued by the organization’s desire to expand in breadth, depth, service access and reputation.

This was the right time for this position in many ways, as these goals aligned directly with my personal desire for a new challenge and the opportunity to leave a lasting legacy in my profession.

Q: What are the biggest challenges or opportunities facing pediatric surgeons now?

With continued advances in children’s surgery, we know more and we can diagnose more.

The baby, Lynlee Boemer, was delivered via C-section many weeks later in good health.

His experience includes various speciality procedures for fetal and newborn disorders such as congenital diaphragmatic hernia, lung abnormalities, chest wall deformities, omphalocele, gastroschisis, and difficult wound management.

Traditional postnatal surgery was not an option, she wouldn’t survive until birth. These elements, coupled with the organization’s focus on discovery and innovation in pediatric research and educational excellence led me to join this team.

I am excited to now have the opportunity to help shape and establish a new bar for pediatric surgical services across the nation and beyond.

That was when I was first exposed to the idea that one could perform surgery on a fetus.

While I was always interested in medicine, one aspect that especially captured my interest was embryology – how the embryo develops and all the anomalies that can happen during development. I hope to bring a collaborative leadership style, a spirit of excellence, a tireless dedication to best-outcomes, and to share a vision for transformative and sustainable growth as we move from excellence to preeminence.

He performed this complex treatment which involved briefly removing the fetus from the womb, removing the tumour, and then returning the fetus to the womb to continue developing at Texas Children’s Fetal Center.

Twelve weeks later, the little girl was born again, this time, crying, kicking, and free of disease. He rose to international prominence in 2016 when he and his team successfully operated on a baby in utero, removing a life-threatening tumour and then returning the infant to the womb, where she continued to develop until birth.

Background

Olutoye was born on January 15, 1967, in Lagos, Nigeria, to a family with a long history in academia and the military from Idoani, Ose local government, Ondo State.

His father, Major General (retired) Olufemi Olutoye, was a well-known military commander and traditional leader, while his mother, Professor Omotayo Olutoye, was an academic.

Olutoye’s early desires to become a doctor were motivated by his upbringing in this setting, which instilled in him a strong drive for excellence.

Education

He completed his primary education at Lagos University Staff School before going on to King’s College, Lagos, for his secondary education.

The family resides in the United States.
