Soon after completing his studies, he went to UK to pursue his fellowship in surgery and then spent a decade there working in hospitals.

With a rich experience he returned to his homeland, in 1970’s and brought with himself an idea of provision of free health care to people, inspired by the UK’s health system.

Prof. He later trained in the United Kingdom, specializing in urology and renal transplantation. He is the Professor of Urology and Director of SIUT. They got on with whatever they could manage to expand their services. He has been the Past Presidents of Middle East Society of Organ Transplantation, Transplant Society of SAARC, Asian Society of Transplantation, Pakistan Transplantation Society and Pakistan Association of Urological Surgeons.

After returning home in the early 1980s, Dr. Rizvi started developing a team of doctors, nurses, technicians and other, staff to train them for transplant surgeries. He started SIUT in 1972 as an 8-bedded unit which has become now the largest urology, nephrology and transplant centre of South Asia based on the model of community government partnership, offering all treatment free with dignity.

SIUT is a hub for research and medical education. In an era marked by widening inequalities and injustice, his life inspires medical professionals and philanthropists worldwide. He has served TTS Ethics Committee and is a member of Declaration of Istanbul and WHO Advisory Panel on Organ Transplantation. His work has earned him numerous accolades, including Pakistan’s highest civilian awards, the Sitara-e-Imtiaz and Hilal-e-Imtiaz.

Despite lucrative opportunities abroad, Dr. Rizvi returned to Pakistan in the 1970s to establish a healthcare system where no one would be denied treatment due to financial constraints. It was like people were required to pawn off their self-respect to get a service, which he felt should have been their right as citizens in the first place.

Rizvi went back to Britain and then on to the US to brush up on the latest technology and practices. He is also the pioneer of deceased donor programme and live related liver transplantation in the country. Given his monumental contributions to healthcare and humanity, Dr. Adeeb Rizvi deserves global recognition.

For the Noble Prize Committee, community service could be the sector to evaluate his role as Dr. Rizvi’s lifelong humanitarian work, which also brought a paradigm shift in the medical and healthcare sectors. he has proven that compassion and dedication can overcome the most formidable challenges by advocating for free healthcare, breaking cultural barriers, and transforming lives.

A few second-hand dialysis machines were imported from Britain and added to the small urology ward.
Starting with just eight-bed ward 40 years ago, the hospital is now a double-storey building with 800 beds.
