Biography
Wenzel's early career was as a penciler in the mainstream comic book industry. David's film work includes Old Dogs and Duck Hunt (In Trouble Zone Productions) to name only a few.
He has continued to work on fantasy projects in the children’s book, trade book, and graphic novel markets throughout his career. This three-part adaptation of The Hobbit with writers writers Chuck Dixon and Sean Deming was originally published by Eclipse Comics in 1989. David studied martial arts all his life and is a 4th Degree Black Belt in Issin-Ryu Okinawa Karate and holds three national titles.
David's film work includes Old Dogs and Duck Hunt (In Trouble Zone Productions) to name only a few. He also boxed professionally. He penciled part of The Avengers story arc which won a 1979 Eagle Award for Best Continued Story.
Segueing from comics to children's literature in the 1980s, Wenzel illustrated Robb Walsh's Kingdom of the Dwarfs for Centaur Books, and then illustrated a series of books about American colonial life for Troll Associates.
Wenzel's next major project was the fully painted graphic novel The Hobbit: An Illustrated Edition of the Fantasy Classic.
This technique was instrumental in creating the artworks for, The Hobbit, graphic novel in the early 90s, which has been revised, and is still in print worldwide. Through his extensive experience David has cultivated working relationships with the likes of Fisher Stevens,, Scott Ruden, Jace Alexander, and the great cinematographer, Emmanuel "Chivo" Lubezki.Think Tank, written by David's brother, Kevin Wenzel, was conceived when David called Kevin from the set of the Cohen Brothers film Burn After Reading.
