Born in Blåkrog, a small village in southern Jutland, he trained initially under the painter Jens Juel at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen.
In Paris he also made drawings and paintings in and around the city and suburbs, observing daily life around him. His later works, including his studies of nudes, exhibit a growing interest in the tactile qualities of flesh and fabric, foreshadowing the naturalism of the Skagen painters.

Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg (2 January 1783 – 22 July 1853) was a Danish painter.
After serving as an apprentice to two minor artists, Eckersberg enrolled in the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 1803, aspiring to be a history painter. His pedagogical approach, which stressed the importance of drawing from life and studying the Old Masters, became foundational for Danish artistic education.
After him are Hugh Glass, Catharina of Württemberg, Charles Frederick, Grand Duke of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach, William Sturgeon, François Magendie, and Roustam Raza.
