The leader, who holds degrees in Political Science from Punjab University, India, and Law from Bombay University, India, said the marginalisation of the people of Eastern extraction made him travelled to India to understudy the approach of one of the world’s foremost non-violent nationalists, Mahatma Gandhi.
Uwazuruike spoke on Saturday on the occasion of this year’s General Assembly of the Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organisation which was held virtually due to travel restrictions imposed to curtail the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.
Founded in 1991, the UNPO is an international membership-based organisation established to empower the voices of unrepresented and marginalised peoples worldwide and to protect their fundamental human rights.
At the General Assembly on Saturday, MASSOB was inducted as a member of the UNPO alongside four others including the Yoruba World Congress headed by elder statesman, Prof Banji Akintoye.
At the event, the MASSOB leader took the Assembly down history lane, “The Northern Oligarchies led by the Hausa/Fulanis want to Islamise Nigeria and want to take over the lands of Southern Nigeria who are predominantly the people of Eastern Nigeria.
I feel that instead of resorting to war and coming back to peace, we have to pursue the line of peace without going the war zone. Our office in Okigwe was burnt by the federal government. Uwazuruike was arrested on several occasions on charges of unlawful gathering and disturbance of public peace. Having experienced the horror of the Biafran war as a kid, Uwazuruike nursed hopes of resuscitating the defunct republic albeit through peaceful means.
He has sinceembarked on severalregionalprojectsincluding the erection of a library in honour of Ojukwu and buildingresidentialhouses for displacedBiafran War veterans.
Uwazuruike condemns the killing of Igbos in northernstates of the country by the Boko Haramgroup and continuallycalls on Igbos to return home in order to avoid the massacre.

Leader of the Movement for the Actualization of Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), Chief Ralph Uwazuruike says he would wish his body to be cremated when he dies.
A press release issued by Uwazuruike’s media assistant, Chris Mocha said the MASSOB leader made the request during an enlarged meeting of MASSOB held at Ojukwu Memorial Library, Owerri, the Imo state capital, Uwazuruike, adding that the MASSOB members must not to bury him in the ground whenever he died.
The release quoted Uwazuruike as saying that the ashes burnt from his body should be sprayed into the flowing rivers in Igboland, pleading with them to, among other things, ensure that after his death, that the necessary funeral rites according to Igbo customs and tradition are performed for him.
“If I die today get planks and tyres and make blazing flames and burn my corpse to ashes; then gather these ashes in different parts.
The then Attorney-General of the Federation, Bayo Ojo, SAN, appeared in person for the government while Mike Ahamba, SAN, represented the defendant before being replaced by Festus Keyamo.
They suffocated the entire region. Justice Binta Nyako eventually granted him three-month bail to enable him bury his mother who had died during his incarceration.
In 2011, Uwazuruike and 280 MASSOB members were arrested in Enugu at an event in honour of Ojukwu. He alleges to have been flown to Abuja aboard a private jet and remanded in an underground SSS facility.
In April 2013, the Supreme Court held that the trial could commence after rejecting contrary submissions by Festus Keyamo.

Leader of the Movement for the Actualisation of Sovereign State of Biafra, Chief Ralph Uwazuruike, said he spent 10 years in India studying Mahatma Gandhi’s non-violence approach to achieving sovereignty.
Uwazuruike, who heads the secessionist agitation of the Biafran people, said the people of Eastern Nigeria were tired of the incessant bloodshed of their members across Nigeria, noting that they would not resort to war but rather explore peaceful negotiations to realise their agenda..
By 1999, we were constrained to form the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra.
“It was because of this that I had to travel to India to study Mahatma Gandhi who happened to achieve independence for India through non-violence. He was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1991.....
Uwazuruike founded MASSOB in 1999, in the aftermath of the Nigerian elections that produced President Olusegun Obasanjo.
On one occasion, he was arrested in Lome, Togo, for storming the 36th Organisation of African Unity (OAU) Summit which had in attendance several African Heads-of-State.
Uwazuruike's longest spell in detention was to come in 2005 when he was arrested in his Okwe hometown by men of the Nigerian Police. We lost over 3,000,000 people between 1967 and 1970 when the war ended.
After the war, the killing of our people continued unabated in Nigeria.

Ralph Uwazuruike is the leader of the Movement for the Actualization of the SovereignState of Biafra; a groupcanvassing for the secession and sovereignty of Eastern Nigeria.
He has been detainedseveraltimes and charged with treason in Nigerian courts. Make sure that you dump them inside the flowing River Niger in Onitsha, Imo River in Owerrinta, Ezu River in Amansea, Orashi and Ogbuide in Oguta, Omambala River in Otuocha and every other flowing stream in Biafraland.
“When you throw my burnt ashes into the flowing rivers, allow the streams to carry them away.
“Apart from these, every other burial rites due for an illustrious son must be performed for me.
It is not as if I’m dying now, but in case, death is a necessary end that comes when It will come”, Uwazuruike requested.
Uwazuruike stated that his decision was in line with the lifestyle Mahatma Ghandhi, who he said was one of his heroes after Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu.
He reiterated his resolve to follow Ghandhi’s footsteps to the end by not taking up any political position whether elective or by appointment in New Biafran Regional Government.
He was released on orders of Nigerian President, Goodluck Jonathan.
Uwazuruike was charged with treason in 2005 at the Federal High Court, Abuja, before Justice Binta Nyako. The then military governor of Eastern Nigeria, Dim Ojukwu, had to bring together his people to secure their lives and property and in that process declare a Biafran Independence.
As soon as Ojukwu did that, the entire people of Nigeria joined to fight the people of the eastern states.
