But she has become best known for being Beatrix, for how she looks, the clothes she wears, the way she conducts herself in the world—in other words, her style, her very way of being.

I feel certain now that this was her plan, allowing me a few minutes alone to absorb everything around me, this new world I’d been welcomed into, which was unlike any I’d been in before. “It will be wonderful to show the work on the west coast in Los Angeles – to a different clientele as well,” she says happily.

 

As more fans discover her work, Ost’s creative process remains the same, drawing inspiration from life and social issues and putting them into her painting. “I’m always in equilibrium of mind and body – I’m deeply satisfied and happy with what the day will present to me.”

She even found a pied-à-terre in Charlottesville she’s begun fixing up, for when she doesn’t want to come back to the too-quiet country after a night on the town. She told me she always has a deep sense of wonder and surprise at being where she is, in this house, surrounded by hundreds and hundreds of Virginia acres. Numbers.

Neither of us could believe it. It was just there. She insists she is not a shopper, and while I don’t totally buy this, I know what she means. For better or worse, she has become her art, and the rest of it—her painting, design, sculpture, and writing—orbits her like many smaller moons.

The first time I met her was in September. Unquestionably an “old soul,” she doesn’t sweat the small stuff, but chooses to focus on what really matters: a heart and mind fully engaged with the world around her.

Ost found the experience of writing a memoir to be a profound journey where “the story comes out in pieces” with one memory triggering another. “I’m good at recalling scenes from life past,” she claims, “but I’m more impressed [by] being in the now, in this moment’s beauty!”

Born in Stuttgart, Germany in 1940, Ost took to art quickly, beginning her painting career at the age of twelve.

“I’m not very active,” insists Ost. “It just seemed to happen from people’s interest in my stories!” 

For someone who seems perpetually busy, Ost needs no reminder to live in the moment. She draped a dark shawl over her shoulders.
