After May 2023, I will continue to teach and serve at Gateway, but in a supportive role to Carlos and our staff. Given this, I’m excited to let you all know that this next May 2023, I will officially move into the Founding Pastor role at Gateway Church and will pass the baton of Senior Pastor to Carlos Ortiz.

I believe God led Carlos and Libby Ortiz and their family to Gateway for this very reason.

Since writing Imagine Heaven seven years ago, there has been an incredible response of people around the world finding faith, hope, and healing through reading the book. How do you respond to evidence of God’s love and the testimonies of those who have experienced divine encounters?

Imagine yourself standing before Jesus, experiencing His profound love and peace.

These experiences are not uncommon, though people are often hesitant to share them. How can you allow this vision to deepen your faith and guide your actions? Not only do they claim to see their lives, they say that they feel the good and the bad from their own perspective, and from the perspective of others impacted by their actions. After she was resuscitated she reported traveling to this amazing place and meeting a God of love and light.

She flies out of the hospital to see a cityscape, travels through a tunnel, and to a heavenly place where light and love emanate from everything. In addition to leading Trek, John served as chairman of President George W. Bush’s President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports.

John is an avid cyclist, sustainability advocate, runner, and published author.

He served as the chairman of the NCWC's Committee on Special War Activies; his efforts were recognized by the U.S. War Department following the end of World War I, when Burke was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal. Descriptions include shooting stars, crystalline streams of light, even contrails shooting up to God the Father. I really do believe God has led us through these first 25 years, and He has brought Carlos and our great team of Campus Pastors and Executive Team to lead our mission forward for successive generations.

While NDEs sparked my curiosity around the possibility of an afterlife, I came to faith through the historical evidence of Jesus, such as the prophecies in the book of Isaiah, written long before Jesus was born, and which accurately foretold His life and mission. I believe this is just what Jesus said that nothing will be hidden, that every motive, thought and deed will be laid bare (Mark 4:22).

After building into Carlos and watching him lead these past three years, including leading all the staff and Campuses this year as Executive Pastor, I’m even more excited and confident that Gateway’s best days are ahead. He is far more majestic, sovereign, loving and in control than we can possibly imagine. John and his wife, Tania, live in Madison, Wisconsin.
