He constantly ponders the relationship between human and nature, gradually crossing the absolute dependence dominated in western culture and turned his focus to inner-self V.S. natural surroundings.
ARON DEMETZ
Aron Demetz is a sculptor who primarily uses traditional woodcarving techniques to create life size sculptures, which often convey his preoccupation with humanity’s relationship to nature.
Demetz’s sculptures present mankind and nature as one, reflecting the fragility of both. The “Burning Series” shows the original color of wood is still underneath the carbonized surfaces and never dies even after burning the sculptures; the contrast between smooth and rough surfaces contains temperature of life within.
The “Resin Series” presents self-healing nature of trees, woods produce sap to heal their wounds which is a symbolic meaning of men also have the same capabilities. 1972, Val Gardena, Italy)
Aron Demetz has achieved international prominence with exhibitions at the Venice Biennale in 2009, PAC in Milan, MACRO in Rome and the Arp Museum in Rolandseck, Germany.
The process of working with wood is the foundation of Demetz's oeuvre and aesthetic.

Sometimes he chars the wood using a flame-thrower. The statues are given their own surface structure, personalising the form as it were.
The latest development in the artist’s work is the use of the computer, which enables him to mill out the forms. People may find his creations appear material’s physical transformation through natural process.
He grew up close to nature and woodcraft was naturally a discipline practiced by many people around him.
As a 14-year-old boy, Demetz went to the Wolkenstein (Selva) school of art to learn the woodcutting trade.
The process of working with wood is a fundamental part of Demetz’s aesthetic, where he explores the possibilities and limitations of it as a material and celebrates the wood textures and its transformation by applying varying natural processes. It’s a way of not only being clear and unequivocal, but a means by which one reverts back to zero.” Aron Demetz
The stark contrast between the smoothly carved figures and the highly textured distressed wood surfaces; the pale limewood and charred wood cast in bronze, serves as a visual metaphor for this ambivalent relationship between humanity and nature - our coexistence with the natural world and our alienation from it.
