There are literally no details on my model's face or body.

I could improve this photograph by pointing another flashgun from the front above, somewhere around 45' so the model is light up as well.

In conversation with: Photographer, Andrew Hobbs

We caught up with the photographer behind our SS21 shoot, Andrew Hobbs, to talk about his career highlights and inspirations.

Andrew, tell us a little about yourself & how you became a fashion photographer…

I started shooting for local boutiques in my teens, working for clothes and cash.

Pointing the lighting from above the model and from behind was definetely not a good idea. As he grew older, Andrew continued to hone his skills and eventually attended the Art Institute of California in Los Angeles where he earned a degree in photography.

Since then, Andrew has become one of the most sought-after photographers in the industry.

There are more than one coloured light in Andrew Hobbs' photograph, so because of that, I will place different colour gels in front of two fleshlights. His work has been featured in numerous publications, including National Geographic, The New York Times, and The Guardian.

Andrew's passion for photography began at an early age when he received his first camera as a gift from his parents.

The model in the original photograph is a woman and my model is a man, the lighting in the original photograph is soft and nice spread but my photograph is more harsh light. He is also an active member of several professional organizations such as the American Society of Media Photographers (ASMP) and Professional Photographers of America (PPA).

Andrew's work is characterized by its unique perspective on everyday life.

We are currently adding Special Projects that work outside of our usual timeline for Centrefold Magazine, the first being a collaboration with Calvin Klein and Bella Hadid.

Who/what is your biggest influence/inspiration and why?

I don’t believe there is just one single influence for me that stands out more than others, I’m inspired by so many artists across many mediums.

His passion for photography remains strong after all these years, inspiring others to pursue their own creative dreams through his work.

.

I think this was true for many including myself.

I think the most important thing for artists/photographers to do is to find their own voice/identity. His work has been featured in countless exhibitions around the world and he has won numerous awards for his stunning images.

I didn't really took any of the composition of the original photograph, however I am still very proud and pleased of my work, I think it's a very original piece of work.

This photograph is definetely a fail, not only from a technical point of view but also from a creative and intetional point of view. With location shooting, you have the planet doing your set build and lighting; but you still need to treat it as you would in a studio.

Definition of the perfect shotObviously very subjective, and hopefully the one you and your client agree on.

What's the one thing you can't live without? My wine collection.

When Im not shooting, Im…Running my creative agency/magazine, Centrefold.

Hobbs is a renowned photographer and visual artist based in Los Angeles, California. It was the Eighties and you couldn’t be seen dead wearing the same thing twice, so this was a great way to earn a living and keep up with fashion.

Later, I went to university to study photography which then led to assisting and so on from there.

Editorial assignments for a variety of publications including i-D and Vogue then led to shooting for brands that put me in the position to start my own publishing company turned creative agency, Centrefold.

What did you enjoy most about the French Connection SS21 shoot?

It was fun to work with such a great team.

I spent my early years trying to emulate my heroes, only to discover that was not my story to tell. I want my model to wear more leather, for a example a leather jacket, but I want one object to be very colorful, maybe a hat, a Tee shirt or maybe a scarf.

This photoshoot involes two flashguns, so I will need more people to help me. Everyone worked incredibly hard and the models really captured the concept, which showed in the final images.

What is your career highlight so far…

It’s hard to pick just one moment, there have been so many.

I guess sometimes there is more to play with during AW due to more fabrics and layering.

In the studio or on location shoots?Again, it’s the same thing for me, control of light. He has been capturing stunning images of the world around him for over 20 years. The idea of colours being spread all over the photo.

Shoot

This photoshoot involves lots of colours which are obtained in different ways. I will acheave something similar using different methodes.

For example, the thing that makes the photograph on the left special and unique is the uses of colours.

This is what inspired me for my shoot.
