She began her artistic career as a painter, graduating from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2003. Her photographic work explores photography's relationship to sculpture, reflecting on the ways in which it can redefine the very meaning and materiality of sculpture.
Laviada has received numerous awards including Photo España's Descubrimientos Prize, the Photography Biennial in Mexico, and the FONCA Young Creators grant.
Her work has been exhibited widely and is in the permanent collection of the Jumex Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, the Centro de la Imagen in Mexico, as well as several private collections.
Alejandra Laviada was born in Mexico City in 1980.
Laviada's work rises from the intersections between these different mediums, constantly pushing the boundaries and definitions of each one. Upon graduating, she was selected as one of 11 artists to featured in PEEK – the 2007 installment of The Art + Commerce Festival of Emerging Photographers.
Since her work first appeared in PEEK, Laviada has been commissioned and published in magazines including the New York Times Magazine, American Photo, and VOGUE.
Alejandra Laviada (Mexico City, 1980) completed her BFA in Painting at the Rhode Island School of Design and her MFA in Photography from the School of Visual Arts in New York. She currently lives in Paris.
Laviada started her career in photography, before expanding her practice onto other mediums. Soon after, however, she turned her attention to photography, completing an MFA in photography at the School of Visual Arts in New York.
She was awarded honorable mention at the XII Photography Biennial in Mexico, and her work was singled out by critics when it was most recently shown as part of the exhibit "Chisel" at the first New York Photo Festival.

She often uses ordinary or discarded objects as raw material, which she then transforms into sculptural works.Her multidisciplinary practice moves from the concrete toward the abstract, and includes photography, painting, sculpture, ceramic and video.
