I had a gut feeling I needed something to mark a memorable day and asked all four to sign a copy of the scorecard: three major champions and a kid called Tiger Woods who I thought could be quite good.”

That was a phenomenal day for the caddy who was later employed by Woods in 1999 and went on to accompany him till 2011.

No one said anything, but Steve Williams couldn’t help but admire the ‘skinny kid’ as he called Tiger Woods back in the day.

He wrote about the incident in his book fondly. He later caddied for Greg Norman and Raymond Floyd before joining Tiger Woods in 1999. All three Pro golfers have been extraordinary on the course. At the age of ten, he began caddying at his home club in New Zealand, spending his summers and weekends there learning the game.

In the early morning, legendary golfers of the time such as Fred Couples, Williams’ former partner Greg Norman, and his then-golfer Raymond Floyd were having a practice round.

It was Tiger Woods‘ first game at the Masters, so he too joined the trio on the course.

The excerpt from his book says, “When I first saw Tiger Woods up close I had no doubt I was watching someone special – yet also completely out of my reference sphere.”

He reminisced about the day sharing how the early morning dampness in the air was hindering the ball from flying too high.

“I’ve only asked for an autograph once in my life – after we walked off the 18th green that day. You might think that the caddy is just the person who carts around the golfer’s bag, (and when he was a youngster that’s just what Williams did) but actually there is much more to it than that. This was a special moment – playing with my former boss, Greg, my current boss, Raymond, and my future boss (not that I knew that at the time).

Their partnership was strong because Williams saw something special in The Tiger and believed in him.

The veteran caddy predicted great future for many

Apart from young Tiger Woods, Steve Williams also recognized potential in several other golfers. His first professional caddying stint was with Australian great Peter Thomson when Steve was just 13 years old.

Hearing this, the other golfers could barely hide their scoff. Then Woods took the shot, and lo and behold, he left the trio, and the caddy in stunned silence. As he got to know the different courses, Williams was able to advise his player which club to use, which shot to play, how to play the shot, and moreover, he was able to ‘calculate the yardage’ and advise how long, short or wide to play the shot.

Some, however, haven’t made it yet. Although I am not a huge fan of sports in general or golf in particular, I found this to be a thoroughly engrossing and enjoyable read….and there’s a really useful glossary of golfing terms in the back of the book.

Golfers and caddies have a very special relationship.

But Steve is still waiting to be proven right.
