He decided not to go to college on a golf scholarship. His mom worked night shifts at a factory. Rory later bought them a house, saying he could never fully repay them. At nine years old, Rory won his first big international amateur tournament in Miami, Florida. However, he had a tough final round and finished tied for 15th. He bounced back strongly at the U.S.
Open in June. His father served as his first coach, teaching him the basics of golf. Their hard work paid off when Rory won his first World Championship for the 9–10 age group bracket in Miami, Florida.At 15, he was a member of Europe’s winning 2004 Junior Ryder Cup team. The following year and the next, he became the youngest back-to-back winner of both the West of Ireland Championship and the Irish Close Championship.He was also part of the 2005 European Amateur Team Championship and the 2007 European Amateur Team Championship champion team.In August 2006, he won the European Amateur at Biella Golf Club, then became the second man to top the World Amateur Golf Ranking the following year.At the 2007 Open Championship, McIlroy was awarded The Silver Medal as the leading amateur.He won the Silver Medal at Carnoustie and topped the Amateur world rankings for the first time.Professional Career- It was also in 2007 when Rory became a professional golfer, signing with the International Sports Management and graduating to the European Tour.
He got help from different coaches, including Dave Stockton and Brad Faxon, who was known as a great putter. By age three, he was already hitting golf balls 40 yards! Rory and his dad, Gerry McIlroy, in May 2013 At home, Rory practiced chipping golf balls into the family's washing machine. On April 13, 2025 at Augusta National Golf Club, he captured his fifth Major title, becoming only the sixth player ever to complete the coveted career Grand Slam.
