It didn't take long for Wayne Rooney to become a name to remember.

Post Everton

Once Rooney began to express the desire to leave Everton, it didn't take long for him to catch the eyes of two large soccer clubs: Manchester United and Newcastle United.

Manchester United soon won the debate over who would end up with him by taking him on for $50 million.

It was not until he was taken into Manchester United that Rooney really made it big.

He quickly won young player of the year in 2005 and 2006.

However, he broke the fourth metatarsal in his right foot during a game against Chelsea on April 6, 2006, bringing question to whether he would be playing in the world cup that year.

After a bone scan on the 25th of May, the doctors said it was unlikely he would be returning to the world cup, yet it was decided that he would travel with the team and return for a bone scan on June 7.

Just before the scan Rooney claimed that he was "300% confident" of his own fitness.

The day after his scan, he was announced to be completely well again and that "He just needs to get back his fitness before he can play".

Once back on the field (subbing in for Michael Owen in a game against Trinidad and Tobago) he proved to be in great shape and ready for the world cup (though he did not score a goal).

Red Card Incident

During the world cup, England went up against Portugal in a game, causing Rooney to clash with Manchester United superstar, Cristiano Ronaldo.

That in turn left an infuriated Rooney to shove Ronaldo, who sparked further outrage by winking at his bench.

Rumours circulated in the press as to whether their fracas might have seeped into the United dressing room ahead of the 2006/07 season. This narrative aims to shed light on Rooney’s selfless contributions and the indelible mark they left on Ronaldo’s career trajectory.

The Beginnings of a Legendary Partnership

The summer of 2003 marked the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo at Manchester United from Sporting Lisbon, following a mesmerizing performance against the Red Devils that caught Sir Alex Ferguson’s eye.

Ronaldo’s arrival in England was a herald of the incredible journey that lay ahead.

The 2006 World Cup quarter-final between England and Portugal proved a hurdle after a 20-year-old Rooney stamped on defender Ricardo Carvalho's groin, reports the Mirror.

Ronaldo, in an attempt to sway the referee, rushed over to protest as his club teammate was sent off. Rooney’s ability to draw defenders, his vision, and his playmaking skills created the perfect environment for Ronaldo to exploit defenses.

The evolution of this partnership was evident in the statistics; as Rooney embraced a more creative role, dropping deeper to link play, Ronaldo’s goal-scoring output saw a significant uptick.

However, it was the subsequent arrival of Wayne Rooney from Everton in 2004 that truly set the stage for a partnership that would come to define a generation at Manchester United.

Rooney, known for his ferocious energy and creativity, complemented Ronaldo’s pace and trickery perfectly. Ronaldo’s impressive tally of goals and assists during his time at United is a testament to the symbiotic relationship he shared with Rooney.

Yet reconciliation between the two came surprisingly swiftly as they cleared the air immediately after the final whistle, bringing them even closer together.

Rooney told the Sunday Times in April 2020 he would have done the same in Ronaldo’s position, adding: "I went over to him afterwards in the tunnel.

As Ronaldo continues to dazzle on the world stage, the legacy of his partnership with Rooney remains a testament to the power of selflessness and collaboration in the pursuit of greatness.

Outline

Yet, while Ronaldo’s name is often mentioned in debates about the greatest footballers of all time, the crucial role played by Wayne Rooney in Ronaldo’s development is sometimes overlooked.

But while the two youngsters were enjoying their time on the pitch and scoring goals with ease, tensions grew between the two legends.

Their relationship took a turn for the worse when Rooney, who had retired by then, publicly criticised Ronaldo's behaviour during his second season at United. Which is true."

Ronaldo spoke brutally about his non-existent relationship with Rooney and Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville as a result of their ongoing criticism, stating: "They are not my friends, they were colleagues.

He was taken notice of by the soccer club, Everton.

Just before his 11th birthday, he signed a schoolboy contract with Everton.

He quickly became one of the better players on the squad through his early teens, and, consequently, he advanced to the senior team at the age of 16.

On October 19, 2002, five days before his 17th birthday in a game against the team that was dominating the Premier League, Arsenal, he scored a last minute goal which brought Everton to a victory.

I think every player, bar probably Lionel Messi, is jealous of Cristiano." What the future holds for the two legends of the game and their relationship remains to be seen, though it would certainly be a shame for them not to reconcile in the future.
