Moseley won his first World Cup moguls event in 1996. It’s just it’s such a beautiful part of the world. I’ve seen bears back there. Like, there’s the topography, there’s the weather.  After winning the US Open Slopestyle gold medal and an X Games silver with his original trick, the Dinner Roll, Jonny broke convention completely when he threw the off-axis 720 in the moguls competition at the 2002 Olympics and changed the sport of freestyle skiing forever.

Hosting on and off the mountain

As a result of his 2002 Olympic performance, Jonny hosted Saturday Night Live, leading him into a career in TV hosting and commentary.

So it’s kind of like in my blood. Like the 1960 Olympics versus, you know, a World Cup today. Both their dads were the best skiers on the mountain at one point too!

And I loved it. It’s this combination of factors… You probably couldn’t even think of all the factors that go into making this place special.

Q: Can you tell us about one of your earliest Palisades Tahoe memories?

Jonny: Well, the first thing that pops into my mind is peeing in my pants a lot as a little kid.

And then let’s see number three… Yeah, I’d say Broken Arrow down into Tower 16. To me, the Stifel Palisades Tahoe Cup must be what it was like. I love watching Daron turn and I learn so much from watching him ski. So those are my those are my top skiers.

Q: Which trick aged better: Daffy or Iron Cross?

Jonny: I mean, I love a daffy.

Sample video upon request. During that season he won nine events, was US champion, and won the season World Cup. After his ski career ended, Moseley became an investor in the new television network, The Ski Channel, along with numerous other well-known skiers and celebrities. There’s wildlife back there! His family relocated to California when he was a child, and while in high school, he joined the Squaw Valley Freestyle Ski Team, won the Junior Nationals in freestyle, and shortly after graduating from high school in 1993, he made the US team.

That’s one of my earliest memories is having a hot crotch.

I would say, on a more serious note, being out there with my brothers, skiing around the mountain, trying to jump off everything possible, competing in the moguls.  Using unorthodox training methods and adopting the 360 mute grab from his peers, he stretched the existing rules and won the 1998 Olympic Gold exhibiting the new style of skiing to the mainstream recreational skier.

When the progression stopped in 1996, Jonny noticed and fell in with a new generation of freestyle skiers. Jonny also has extensive experience as an MC for live events including fundraisers.
