#FridayFinds Sportswoman and parliamentarian the Honourable Eugenia “Jean” Pierre was born on March 26th, 1944 in Fyzabad.

By the time of the 1979 World Netball Championships, which was held in Port of Spain, Jean Pierre was the Captain of the national team.

SporTT will oversee this transformation, set to begin in the coming months.

A trailblazer in sport and education

Eugenia “Jean” Pierre stands tall as one of the most distinguished athletes of Trinidad and Tobago’s sporting history. She also holds the distinction as the only player to compete in the first five World Netball Championships: 1963, 1967, 1971, 1975 and 1979.

Her accomplishments, however, grew beyond the playing court.

Sports such as table tennis, volleyball, basketball, badminton, gymnastics, martial arts and even hockey have found a home here.

Beyond its indoor and outdoor hard courts, ‘Jean Pierre’ features external precast concrete tiered seating, athlete change rooms, offices, washrooms, service rooms and storage rooms.

She later became a parliamentarian, a sports minister in Trinidad from 1991 to 1995. Originally named the Southwest Port of Spain Regional Park alongside the National Stadium (now Hasely Crawford Stadium), the Complex was named after a giant in T&T sport—netballer Eugenia “Jean” Pierre.

Although netball was its primary focus, the Jean Pierre Complex has hosted countless sporting and cultural events over the years.

In recognition of her contributions to netball in Trinidad and Tobago, the Jean Pierre sports complex in Port-of-Spain was named after her.

She received the Trinidad & Tobago Humming Bird Medal Gold (for Netball) in 1974  and in 1979, she received Trinidad & Tobago Trinity Cross (for Netball)  and Trinidad & Tobago Chaconia Medal Gold.

She went on to compete in the 1967, 1971, 1975, and 1979 World Netball Championships, making her the only player to participate in all five world championships since the first one took place in 1963. Her achievement made Trinidad and Tobago the first country to both host and win the World Netball Championships, and Jean was named one of the top 10 players in the world.
