“When I’m having a really hard time on a line, I actually scream at myself – to the laughter of most of my friends,” she says.
“I used to say ‘breathe’ and ‘control’ with every step. I wanted to understand how fear was holding me back, and whether the voice in my head telling me not to do it was fear, or intuition.
Standing on a narrow strap stretched above a precipice, with the overwhelming sense of height, imagination, and mind-blowing challenges, every fiber of her being tells her that she should not be there.
A Record-Breaking Highliner
Dickey holds the previous world record for women in highlining. Being an inclusive business, I create safe spaces for people from all backgrounds and with different abilities to show up and learn how to climb, rappel, or highline.
She also holds her own height record of 1200 meters in the Alps, Sweden.
Finally, Dickey holds the female world record for free solo slacklining, a nerve-wracking feat that requires nerves of steel. Longlining involves walking on long webbing straps at low heights, and to add more challenges, Dickey sometimes chooses to set her routes over water.
What started as a part of her summer vacation in her hometown turned into a true addiction that changed her life and mindset. She went on to push her records further, becoming the undefeated Female World Highline Champion for six years, multiple times leveling the playing field and sharing records with her male counterparts. It helped me get into that meditative state where I’m just focused and not thinking.
I get to share the incredible Moab landscape along with the outdoor sports that make it so fun to live in.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Being an outdoor athlete is a lot different than running a business. But another thing I noticed was the lack of women in the industry, and so being both a woman owned business and offering a new activity on the market felt special.
This is undoubtedly a risk, however for me it was a controlled risk with a specific pursuit. So then it’s just fear I’m fighting against – and there’s nothing really to be afraid of.”
People often mistake highlining as a thrillseeking, adrenaline junkie sport, but Dickey explains that it’s actually the opposite.
It might be as simple as speaking to a stranger at a party, quitting a job you hate, or visiting a foreign country alone. By having a mantra, I was able to quiet some of the thoughts in my head.”

About Faith Dickey
Faith Dickey began Highlining in 2009 as much by chance as by choice.
You have to push that fear away with every step.”
The whole time you’re walking across a line, fear is telling you give up. I was transitioning away from high level Highlining, and yet I still wanted the sport to be a part of my life.
Risk doesn’t have to be death defying, in fact it varies greatly person to person. She triumphantly crossed a distance of 105 meters in Moab, Utah, becoming the first woman to surpass the 100-meter threshold. As I grew older, I found myself less and less interested in risk, though admittedly my comfort with risk is so far beyond the average person that it may appear I still take risks all the time!
